The importance of your PIN

It’s now more important than ever to remember your PIN as you will need to use it to pay when you are at the till. So it’s essential that you have a PIN which you find easy to remember and feel comfortable using.

Tips for choosing a PIN

If you are thinking about changing your PIN, here are some tips for choosing a new one:

Don’t choose a number which may be easy for someone else to guess, such as:
  • Numbers associated with you like your date of birth or your card number etc
  • A sequence of numbers in ascending or descending order such as: 1234, 7890 or 7654 etc
  • The same number repeated such as: 2222, 5555, 9999 etc
  • Notable dates such as: 1066, 1984, 2003 etc

Instead why not:

Choose a date which is memorable to you (but not your year of birth)
  • Break the 4-digits down into two lots of two numbers which are meaningful to you, such as your age and your child’s age
  • Use a number which is already stored in your memory such as part of an old car registration or an old phone number
  • Or alternatively you might prefer to choose 4 numbers which make a pattern on the keypad when they’re typed in

However you decide to choose your PIN make sure you memorise it. You should never tell your PIN to anyone, regardless of who they may be.
